My visit to a republic that diplomatically does not exist

I expected Soviet nostalgia ahead of my visit to Tiraspol, Moldova's second largest city, or the "capital" of Trans Dniestr. To some extent my expectations were also fulfilled when seeing Lening greet passer-byes in front of the "presidential palace", the three tiered pricing system (Trans Dniestrians, Moldovans/Ukrainians, and everyone else), and the requirement to register with local authorities. On the other hand I was positively surprised by meeting several people speaking English or German and by some of the restaurants that could easily have stood up to competition from European and American counterparts. As you can see from a couple of the pictures the war with Moldova in 1991 is still fresh in many peoples' minds with war memorials in Bender and Tiraspol. Apparently the Soviet tank in the picture is from the 1940s and was used in the 1991 war.
