Gomel is the second largest town in Belarus and is unlikely to get many accolades as the nicest, with a clear industrial air. However its border feel, right next to both Ukraine and Russia, gives it something slightly cosmopolitan, or am I fooling myself? There is a decent river walk, and the usual trappings of a post-Soviet city. And there are some quiet leafy streets in the centre which points to past glories.
