I was under the very mistaken impression that Mar del Plata was just a beach place. Maybe it was the name that confused me. But it turns out that this is a real city, of almost a million people, one of the biggest in Argentina. Of course the sea does play a big role in the city, and really adds to its appeal, though to be honest the waves and wind, as well as the colour, hardly appeared very welcoming. Having said that, the town itself has its share of sites and seems less seedy and threatening than Buenos Aires - instead it is a relaxed, happy place, that you could enjoy even without heading for the beach.
