Shikoku is one of the least visited places in Japan, less visited than Hokkaido. This is not because difficult communication - as usual in Japan, Shikoku is easily accessible by train from Okayama. The route from Okayama to Matsuyama (Shikoku’s capital and main city) lasts for about 3 hours and is really picturesque. Firstly you cross famous Seto Ohashi Bridge, then you go between mountains and Seto (Japan Inland Sea) shore. The train goes directly on the shore, the distance to the sea is sometimes not longer than one meter!
Matsuyama is known from its castle, which unfortunately was closed during my visit. But still the views from the castle hill were stunning. The second most famous spot in Matsuyama is Dago Onsen, hot spring functioning there form much more than 1300 years! The Dago Onsen is definitely worth visiting and, however I was the only non-Japanese there, I did not feel odd there. The whole city is very friendly to tourists (even friendlier than other places in Japan) and I wish I could spend more time there.
