The Perfect Rest Stop

I spent a few days in this region in 2011 during a bike ride from Geneve to Basel. While Basel is a larger and perhaps more important city, beside the main square it is quite industrial and bland. Bern on the other hand is an absolute jewel in the center of Europe that no too many tourist get to visit. With its 500 year old downtown it shines like a medieval fairy tale. The suburbs are filled with beautiful parks and woods optimal for day hikes or mountain biking. The only downside with the region is the high cost that one would also experience in the rest of Switzerland.
