One of the oldest settlements in North America

New Mexico is actually a really diverse state with quite a bit of history, and it’s capital Santa Fe has some of the oldest building in North America, erected by the Spanish in the 1500s. I have visited this state three times in the past, different parts but they all offer something enjoyable. The south has vast deserts and dry mountain ranges stretching into Mexico. The central and north part of the state (Albuquerque and Santa Fe are) is slightly more humid and offers much more to see, from the amazing town square in SF to the yearly balloon festival in ABQ that happens every year in October for a full week. The food is amazing and rather different from the neighboring states, there is more of a Spanish influence and a lot more spices are used. For some hidden gems of nature, head north into the mountains toward the Colorado border, small towns like Chama offer up amazing beauty during the foliage season. Dress warm and enjoy the leafs changing colors at 8000ft while you drive on winding roads and rolling hills.
