El Paso and the border

El Paso is a funny place, statistically one of the most dangerous ones in the United States but that really only affects the locals and the cross border gangs. The city is in the very corner of Texas, placing it further west than most of New Mexico actually. You can cover all of downtown in a day or two on foot and there are some great opportunities to sample a wide variety of foods from Mexican, BBQ, TexMex and Chinese to Peruvian and Guatemalan, all very authentic. There are also some really impressive western clothing stores, outlets from American factories on the Mexican side and numerous gun shops with high quality products. Venturing over to Ciudad Juarez on the Mexico side is only a good idea during peace times, be careful and check the local situation before heading over, occasionally when it gets violent the Mexican authorities start sending people back to keep them safe.
