East and Central New York State is a huge area, larger than many European countries and there are huge variations in landscapes, industries and towns as you travel through. Many have lost population over the last couple of decades due to decreases in heavy industry but there are still some really nice areas that are worth a visit. Downtown Albany, the capital of New York has some interesting building and remnants of old Dutch architecture. The Hudson valley surely deserves a drive especially in the West Point area and north up to Hudson town. For a prettier excursion head for the wilderness in the Catskill Mountains or visit the Lake Placid region.
