Anchorage and the southern Alaska coast has a very dear place in my heart as one of the most beautiful places I have been. It is the most northerly major city in the United States beside Fairbanks and a great stating point to explore the state. The weather in Anchorage is very interesting because despite the northern location it doesn’t get insanely cold, the coast keeps the temperatures up. The sea and the archipelagos start just a few miles outside of town and on the western side the city is surrounded by towering mountains that are lusciously green and covered in clouds during the summer months. If you can get up into one of the taller buildings on a clear day (like the Captain Cook Hotel) you can actually see Mt. McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America in the distance, more than a hundred miles away.
