Beyond the Equator

The furthest away you can fly from the capital Male is down to Addu Atoll which is south of thr Equator, and as a foreigner the airline gives you a cerificate of 'achievement' for crossing the Equator (given the cost of the flight, this is the least they can give!). Gan, as it is called, is quite interesting because you can see the lives of the locals here quite openly - there are two resorts but discretion is required here and I stayed at the Equator Village which is not very luxurious but fair enough. Most tourists were there for sea, sun and snorkelling but I took advantage of the free bicycles and cycled wherever land would take me - the furthest you can go is 12.8 kilometers north to the end of the atoll, crossing some smaller atolls all linked by bridges. I was surprised at the infrastructure - more developed than I had expected. But of course this is a very traditional place in every way...
