I had full day to visit what Izhevsk has to offer and was not disappointed. Izevsk was famous of two things. One is motorcycle Izh factory - not working any more, but Izhevsk is still very popular among motorcycle clubs as a place of annual gatherings. Various types of motorcycles are presented in Udmurt museum, placed in a pretty neoclassical building.
But undisputtedly Izhevsk is a world famous weapon producing place. Most of its fame came from one man - Mikhail Trofimovitch Kalashnikov, constructor of widespread automatic pistol. There is a famous museum of shooting arms in Izhevsk with one room devoted to Mr. Kalashnikov. By the way, if you are not a weapon fan, I suggest going to that room only, the other ones were uninteresting for me.
Izhevsk has also some nice tserkvas and as a whole is a decent town worth spending a day. After visiting this city I took a night train (by the way, Izhevsk has a beautiful train station) to Kazan, which is only around 300km away.
