This train journey is always full of adventures. In both borders (Georgian and Azeri) you lose a lot of time while the agents check your passport and ask you for baksheesh.
In case that you do not speak at least some Russian you will be in disadvantage, with few chances to argue.
The train makes stops in some towns, like Aran. You have time to walk around the station and Main Square for a while, but be careful because some times, if the train is late, the stays will be shorter than scheduled.
Some people suggested me to go by bus to Baku, which is faster than the train, but since I am a train lover preferred the train. I made this train journey in 1996, as you can see in the stamp of my azery visa in my passport that I enclose herewith.
