Throughout Thailand but celebrated most elaborately and enthusiastically in Chiang Mai in northern Thailand is the Yi Peng and Loi Krathong Festivals. It typically takes place in November but the dates change based upon the moon, so you need to check for the specific date as the event approaches.
Yi Peng is known for the launching of thousands of lanterns which illuminate the sky. And Loi Krthong is known for the floating of a small basket in the river. It is an incredible sight to take in as throngs and throngs of people partake in this festival. There is also a vibrant parade with floats and many people dressed in native costume.
A highlight of this festival is the very special and incredibly beautiful ceremony at Wat Pan Tao Temple. Young monks dressed in orange robes complete with lanterns and candles prove to be a special spectacle. Check the link for more details.
