Arkhangelsk – surprisingly not so bad

Usually Russian cities are not very beautiful and cannot even be compared with those in Central or Western Europe. Therefore, coming to Arkhangelsk I did not expect much. I came there in a very untypical way – on a yacht, finishing the cruise thorough Kara, Barents and White seas. Surprisingly Arkhangelsk, being one of the biggest ports in Russia, is not laying on the sea shore, but on the bank of river Northern Dvina, 30 kilometers from the sea! So it took us 6 hours to get there, passing by huge ocean ships.
The city was established in 1584, so it is one of the oldest cities in the northern Russia. I did not mention any buildings from XVIth or XVIIth century, but the city center definitely looks old and there are fine examples of the charming wooden architecture. I dare say that apart from Moscow (I did not see Sankt Petersburg yet), Arkhangelsk was the most beautiful Russian city I have seen.
