El Alamein is 105 kilometers west of Alexandria - that's how near the German army got. The easiest way to get there is to negotiate with a taxi driver to take you there. The drive there takes you by many resorts which are part of the Mediterranean coast of Egypt, but when I went in January it was cold and empty.
El Alamein itself is a small town and you wouldn't know anything significant happened there if you just passed by the road. The cemetary of the allied forces is not far from the main road, you just need to find the appropriate turn - the locals know it. Like many cemetaries of the kind, this is very well taken care of by the British so it is like an oasis. Yet, a very sad one, given the memories it evokes. The photos here speak for themselves.
