Switching roads from the Interstate 76 to the 80

I was hitchhiking to Santa Fe, in New Mexico, to meet a girlfriend from Montreal, Quebec.
Arriving to Omaha, in Nebraska, I had some conversation with several truck drivers in a cafeteria in the middle of the road; it was clear that in order to arrive earlier to Santa Fe and to save kilometers and time, it was better to switch roads from the 80 to the 76, which was pointing directly to Denver, in Colorado, and from there it would be easy to continue to Santa Fe.
But in the junction of the two roads I kept waiting for several hours and nobody picked me up, it was very cold and I was hungry. The Interstate 76 was a road less frequented than the 80.
So I changed plans, I left the road 76 and started hitchhiking in the 80. Then, pretty soon, a car driver stopped and brought me to Sydney, still in Nebraska, and then to Cheyenne, in Wyoming.
